Course Description

This course develops the learner’s Arabic phonetics, specifically for reciting the Qur’an and reading Arabic in general. The course is designed for complete beginners with no previous experience of reading Arabic. Students will learn to recognise the letters of the Arabic alphabet and their correct pronunciation, including vowel sounds. Subsequently, the course will build on initial recognition and pronunciation to the formation of words and word groups. This course will also help meet the entry requirements for Level 1 Tajweed or Arabic Language. It will introduce some Arabic language as a taster for students and to further enhance their Arabic experience.

Level: Access (Pre Arabic Level 1 or Tajweed Level 1)

Prerequisites: None.

Progression: Students who complete this course will be able to progress to the following courses:

• Tajweed Level 1 or Tajweed Pathway
• Arabic level 1 or Arabic Language Programme

Course Brief

Studying Foundation Tajweed and Arabic aims to inspire a love of reciting the Qur’an, encouraging students to find joy and personal meaning in their learning experience.

• Develop the love of reciting the Qur’an.
• Recognise and distinguish between the physical shapes of different letters in all their different forms.
• Pronounce the letters correctly from their origins in the mouth or throat (makharij).
• Begin to develop the ability to use the correct phonetics and accent in the Arabic language when speaking it, or reciting the
• Qur’an, du’as, adhkar or any other form of reading or recitation.
• Understand and apply the different vowel signs in conjunction with different letters whilst maintaining correct pronunciation.
• Be inspired to recite the Qur’an correctly, fluently, and beautifully, and continue studying the Arabic language.
• Be able recognise and pronounce words correctly and develop the ability to read.
• Develop some basic vocabulary in the Arabic language and understand some basic grammar concepts.

Exams/Assessments

There will be no formal assessments at the end of the course. Students will be provided with further practice guidance to build on the skills developed in this course and to address any remaining gaps or weaknesses, so that students can join the next available Tajweed or Arabic course at a higher level.

For Introduction to Arabic and Tajweed, students are required to purchase Arabic from the beginning, Part One, by Dr Imran Hamza Alawiye, costing around £6.50. The book is available for purchase online (eBay/Amazon) or at most Islamic bookshops.
