Arabic Literature (AL2)

Description

Course Description:

This course introduces students to selected works from classical Arabic literature and poetry through the study and analysis of key literary texts, including Qism al-Manẓūmāt, selections from the Dīwān of Imam al-Shāfiʿī, 101 Miscellaneous Couplets, and al-Ḥamāsah. Students will develop an appreciation of Arabic literary expression while gaining a deeper understanding of the language’s eloquence, stylistic features, and rich literary heritage.

Level: Alimiyyah Programme Year 2

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge and Understanding

• Understand and respond, in writing, to written language.
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of aspects of the text.

Skills

• Apply the vowel points (Harakah) and demonstrate the usage of words as it is shown in an Arabic dictionary (Al-Tahqiqaat al-Lughawiyyah).
• Demonstrate the ability to bring evidences from Qur’an and Sunnah.
• Demonstrate ability to translate the text accurately into English.

Prerequisites:

Students must successfully complete the AL1 course.

Teaching and Learning Strategies:

The classes will be delivered through text reading and analysis, lectures, discussions which will also include presentations and book reviews. Students will also be instructed to independently study, research and memorise selected literary phrases and passages.

Course Delivery:

This course will be delivered online using a live streaming platform called ‘Zoom’. Lessons will be recorded and students provided access to them. Further details will be emailed to students 5 days before the course commences insha Allah.
